Hello everyone, I’m a packaging designer specializing in personal care products. Recently, I completed the packaging project for our brand’s new mosquito repellent balm. Today, I’d like to share the thought process behind designing this packaging and the creative details we incorporated. I hope this will inspire fellow designers or anyone interested in eco-friendly packaging!
The Initial Challenge: Balancing Sustainability and Functionality
As a brand focused on health and sustainability, we had clear goals for our new mosquito repellent balm:
However, most packaging for mosquito repellent products on the market is either non-biodegradable plastic or overly simplistic and lacking design appeal. We aimed to break this mold by creating packaging that aligns with our eco-friendly values while elevating our brand image.
Design Inspiration: Merging Sustainability with Aesthetics
After researching various packaging materials, we decided to use molded pulp packaging made from sugarcane. The standout features of this material immediately caught our attention:
We partnered with a wholesale deodorant containers supplier for this project. They provided diverse design inspirations and fully customizable solutions, enabling us to achieve a unique product design while staying committed to sustainability.
Creative Details: User-Centered Design
1. Portable and Durable Outer Shell
Since mosquito repellent balm is often used outdoors, the packaging needed to be lightweight yet moisture- and oil-resistant. We adopted the supplier’s wet-pressed molding technology and added an eco-friendly coating, ensuring the container protects the balm effectively while remaining durable.
2. Twist-to-Dispense Mechanism
To enhance user experience, we designed a rotating mechanism for dispensing the balm. Consumers can simply twist the base to control the amount of balm they need, making it intuitive and convenient—especially for quick outdoor applications.
3. Nature-Inspired Aesthetics
The packaging features a soft matte white finish with an embossed brand logo, avoiding additional labels or plastic coatings to ensure 100% biodegradability. The ergonomic shape of the container offers a comfortable grip, aligning with the product’s natural and minimalist concept.
Highlights from the Sales Process
After extensive user testing, our mosquito repellent balm was officially launched. Thanks to the eco-friendly packaging, the product quickly gained positive feedback in the market:
Designing the eco-friendly packaging for the mosquito repellent balm was not just a product development process but a reflection of our brand’s values. Through close collaboration with the supplier and a deep dive into sustainable materials and design, we successfully launched a product that balances practicality and aesthetics.
In the future, we plan to explore even more possibilities with eco-friendly packaging. I hope this sharing inspires you, and I’d love to discuss with fellow designers how we can use design to contribute to a sustainable future!
